Syracuse University Library Associates presented sculptor and book artist Werner Pfeiffer on Thursday, September 11, 2008 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons of E.S. Bird Library. Werner Pfeiffer assembled his artist book, Out of the Sky, which a six-foot tall sculptural tribute to the victims of 9/11. While the assembled work is impressive, the act of putting it together brings out its true emotional power—the images and names of the victims are revealed as the sections are joined. Pfeiffer assembled Out of the Sky while commenting on the technique and inspiration behind it during this presentation. Pfeiffer was born in 1937 in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. He emigrated to the United States in 1961 and became Professor of Art at Pratt Institute in New York City in 1969. There, he also served as director of the Pratt Adlib Press, a publishing venture of Pratt's Department of Graphic Art. Pfeiffer's work as a sculptor, printmaker, and painter has been shown in more then 170 group and solo exhibitions worldwide. He now lives along the Hudson River in Red Hook, NY.
