Learn more about The Family Pictures Syracuse project, the first initiative of the Turning the Lens Collective. Inspired by the work of the Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling, This project orients toward social justice by foregrounding the interaction of everyday material culture and oral history as a method of archival repair. The project recognizes everyday, family photographs as critical access points for shared public memory and windows into stories that too often go unseen and underwritten. This co-collaborative project, which encourages Syracuse city residents to share the stories behind their family photographs, is working toward building a living community archive of our city's public history.
