Drawing on survey data from 116 single moms and interviews with 7 of them, this narrative-style presentation demonstrates how single moms work to make academia more inclusive by being open about their identities, why they need to do this work, and how that shapes their approach to writing and composition. Through their stories, I argue that more can be done to support single moms in higher education including but not limited to making space for their knowledge outside of the classroom, prioritizing scheduling meetings during traditional work hours, showing compassion, and recognizing and valuing the work they do in tenure, review, and promotion materials.
